Team Profile

USQ Motorsport drawns its' membership from a diverse population, both from within the university and without. Everyone involved in any way with the Formula SAE car is counted as a member. This includes students, staff, sponsors and even some others from outside the university.

The core groups within USQ Motorsport are the project students, the project supervisors, and those involved directly in a particular task force. These groups take the greatest responsibility toward completing and competing with the racecar.

Final Year Project Students

Project Manager

John Armstrong

John Armstrong I am a mature age student with previous experience in the automotive industry. After completing Secondary School in 1995 I briefly studied building and architecture before beginning an apprenticeship as a light-vehicle mechanic. I completed my apprenticeship and added to my skills by undertaking workshop management, secretarial duties and staff training as well as working part time as an RACQ roadside assistance technician. I left full time employment in 2001 to study Mechanical Engineering at USQ.

My interests and hobbies are playing squash, playing guitar and modifying cars. Currently I am helping my brother modify and paint his XE Falcon.

Spaceframe Chassis Design

Chris Baker

Chris Baker I am a forth year student who went straight into university after graduating from Fraser Coast Anglican College in 2000. During secondary school and in holidays I worked as a workshop assistant for a marine dealership back in my home town of Hervey Bay. During 1998-99 I also voluntarily spent time crewing for a formula power boat racing team which gave me a great insight into motor sport. In 2001 I started studying a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at USQ.

My interests and hobbies include Rugby Union, Water Skiing, Scuba Diving and 4 Wheel Driving.

Steering Design

Les Rayner

Les Rayner I was born in 1965, finished year 11 at Warwick State High in 1982 and started a printing machinist apprenticeship four days later in Warburton, Victoria. This was completed in October 1985 and I continued to work as a printing machinist until February 2002. During this time I had also completed a Basic Certificate in Welding, and an Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, both at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne.

In 1996/97 I was the Victorian state expert level cross country mountain bike champion following up the next season with a second place. I have totally resprayed and rebuilt approximately 12 cars including 7 or 8 engines and a gearbox. My interests include cycling, woodwork, four wheel driving and camping. I have a wife, Belinda, and one daughter, Alecia. I am currently a councillor with Pathfinders (a group similar to scouts run by our church) and I work part time waterproofing bathrooms for a bit of extra cash. I am in my last year of the Bachelor of Engineering (mechanical) course at USQ.

Drivetrain and Braking System Design

Jeremy Little

Jeremy Little My name is Jeremy Little and I’m apart of the USQ Motorsport team. I grow up on a cattle property in the Miles district where I also finish year 12. I then enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering Technology course, which I completed in 2002 before commencing the Bachelor of Engineering in the mechanical field.

Growing up on a property involved working with a wide range of machinery. I’ve also worked in a mechanical workshop and the exposure to different mechanical vehicles and devices has been a great experience. While working at the workshop I was able to work with motorcycles, which is my hobby both riding and maintaining. Recently I’ve started water skiing and riding jet skis, which I’m starting to see will be an expensive pastime like motorcycles.

Bodywork and Aerodynamic Design

Ken Nelder

Ken Nelder I was born on Albert Einstein’s birthday in 1983, went to Rangeville Primary and Centenary Heights State High Schools, both in Toowoomba, then straight to USQ, beginning a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 2001.

I like cycling, sometimes riding with, but a lot slower than, Les (our steering man). I am a staff member with 210 SQN Australian Air Force Cadets, and hope to join the Australian Army when I finish university.

I am studying and designing the bodywork of the SAE racer, from the aerodynamic perspective. Being a bit green in the practical side of mechanical engineering and design, the design and construction of the USQ’s F-SAE car has been fairly informative for me, even in areas other than mine.
